Historical Marker Program

One of the primary functions of County Historical Commissions is to research and recommend State Historical Markers for important historical sites.

It is the objective of the Historical Commission to fully convey all aspects of the history of Walker County and all its citizens through the Marker Program. The Commission manages the Marker Program through its Markers Committee, which reviews and approves all marker applications. All decisions are made on the basis of historical significance and County historical needs.

Marker Applications

Applications for historical markers are prepared both by Historical Commission members and by members of the public. However, all applications for markers in Walker County must be approved and submitted to the Texas Historical Commission by the Walker County Historical Commission. The Texas Historical Commission will not accept applications directly from the public. There is an application fee of $100.

Applications may be submitted for the upcoming year from September 1 through November 15. However, due to budget and staff cuts the THC now requires early notification, generally by July 15, of topics on which each Historical Commission plans to submit applications in the fall. If a topic it not in the pre-notification list, it cannot be submitted in the fall.

Cemetery Markers and Texas Historic Cemeteries

Markers for cemteries now require that the cemetery first be designated an Historic Texas Cemetery. If you are interested in applying for a Historical Marker for a cemetery during the upcoming marker application period of Sept. 1 through Nov. 15, you must obtain the Historic Texas Cemetery designation (HTC) before applying for the marker. The application process for HTC designation is similar to the regular marker process. More information on that program is available here.

Undertold Marker Program

In addition to the regular marker program there is an undertold topics program for markers that are funded by the THC from application fees for regular markers. Those applications are accepted from May 1 through June 15. More information on the undertold marker program is available here.

Marker Funding and Costs

Please note that historical markers are privately funded. The Texas Historical Commission has limited funds from marker application fees only for the undertold topics program. Costs of markers currently range from $800 for the smallest marker to $1800 for the largest. The fee is due when an application is approved by the middle of the following year. When submitting an application, applicants should have financing pre-arranged. If an application is approved and the fee is not promptly paid, the application lapses. Submitting a Marker Application

If you would like to submit an application for a marker, please notify the Walker Historical Commission of your intent early in the year in order to meet the above THC requirements and deadlines. In your notification, please include the following:

1. The title of the historical marker topic
2. A brief description of the topic
3. An explanation why the topic is historically important.

Further, when you prepare your application, please submit it to the Historical Commission well before the application period so it can be reviewed and amended if necessary.

Any topic or applilcation submitted too late to meet the THC deadlines will be held for consideration in the next program year.
